Irina Pelevina, in full Irina Ivanovna Pelevina (born 1931), Head of the Laboratory of Radiation and Environmental Biophysics of the Institute of Chemical Physics of the Russian Academy of Science, laureate of the Prize of the Russian Federation, laureate of the “Grant of Moscow” Awards in the field of Science and Technology (2002, 2004, 2005), one of the liquidators of the Chernobyl nuclear accident, the deputy editor of the journal “Radiation Biology. Radioecology”, a member of the Expert Council of the State Commission for academic degrees and titles of the RF for Biological Sciences, Vice Chairman of the Scientific Council in Radiobiology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Sciences in Biological Sciences, professor. For her contribution into the research in the field of human tumor radiosensitization she was awarded the Prize of the Government of the Russian Federation.

I. I. Pelevina is engaged into the research of late radiation effect mechanisms and manifestations of genomic instability in the progeny of irradiated cells, mechanisms of adaptive radiation response of cells and biological effect of low exposure doses. She is studying the possibility of raising the effectiveness of malignant tumors radiotherapy in humans and animals by means of combined effects of radiation modifiers on populations of most resistant tumor cells (quiescent cells and in hypoxia).
