Head of the Department
Evgeny Pryakhin

The experimental department conducts research on the effects of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation on experimental biological systems, as well as the development of approaches to correct their adverse effects. Экспериментальный отдел проводит исследования влияния ионизирующих и неионизирующих излучений на экспериментальные биологические системы, а также разработку подходов для коррекции их неблагоприятных последствий.
Areas of research activity:
  • radiobiological, toxicological, radioecological laboratory and field experimental studies of the effect of various factors of physical nature on biological systems at the subcellular, cellular, systemic, organismal, population, biocenotic and ecosystem levels
  • development of approaches to personalize radiosensitivity and risk of long-term radiation effects
  • development of drugs for prevention and treatment of radiation injuries
  • development of new radiopharmaceuticals for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes
  • pre-clinical examination of new drugs, cell technologies, nuclear medicine tools and technologies
  • development of new technologies for radiobiological research
  • scientific justification of radiation protection of the environment on the basis of the ecosystem approach.
Im recent years, Experimental Department has developed:
  • new innovative biotechnological drugs for the treatment of radiation skin lesions and acute radiation syndrome;
  • an experimental model to study the effects of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation on human haematopoiesis in vivo based on xenotransplantation of human haematopoietic stem cells into mice with severe combined immunodeficiency
  • the main regularities of the reaction of freshwater biocenoses to chronic radiation exposure have been studied.

The main radioecological regularities and radiation-hygienic consequences of radiation accidents at the Mayak PA (radioactive contamination of the Techa River; East Urals radioactive trace; the Karachay trace) are determined
Equipment
  • Laboratory facility for irradiation of biological objects under controlled conditions of temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide concentration (IGRUR- 1M).

Popular science articles
In 2020, the personnel of the URCRM Experimental department prepared a series of popular science articles to introduce the work of the URCRM as well as the Experimental department for the attention of general readers. This work was performed on request of Federal State Unitary Enterprise "Russian Federal Nuclear Center – Zababakhin All-Russia Research Institute of Technical Physics" (also known as "RFNC-VNIITF" and "VNIITF").
